![]() The ancient character represents a three level jade object of worship which every ancient would have recognized. It is similar to a totem and often had more than three levels or less than three levels The inside is circular representing the heaven, the outside is square representing the earth天圆地方. The ancients would say苍璧礼天,(a round piece of jade for the ceremony of heaven) 黄琮礼地 (and a square piece of jade for the ceremony of earth)。Faces representing god, animal and human would be carved on the outside like a totem.
