石之美有五德潤澤以溫仁之方也䚡理自外可以知中義之方也其聲舒揚尃以遠聞智之方也不橈而折勇之方也銳廉而不技絜之方也象三玉之連丨其貫也凡玉之屬皆從玉陽冰日三畫正均如貫玉也

The ancient character represents a three level jade object of worship which every ancient would have recognized. It is similar to a totem and often had more than three levels or less than three levels The inside is circular representing the heaven, the outside is square representing the earth天圆地方. The ancients would say苍璧礼天，(a round piece of jade for the ceremony of heaven) 黄琮礼地 (and a square piece of jade for the ceremony of earth)。Faces representing god, animal and human would be carved on the outside like a totem.
